Who is Bryce Peters? Well, that’s simple. He’s me! Or that is, he’s me drawing comics under a pen name, and with a different art style.
In 2008, I got the urge to try my hand at a new way of drawing my Boytoons. I felt the need to take a slight break from my usual, classic style of drawing. I needed to do something that would be completely different and afford me a great deal of freedom and creativity as an artist.
I have always loved the art of Bruce Timm and really appreciate his angular approach to drawing. Also of great appeal to me is the Star Wars: Clone Wars art style and the illustrative style of Japanese greats such as Shunpei Nakata.
So I sat down at my drawing table and began to doodle – to evolve my own take on this angular, cartoony style that fascinated me so much! I couldn’t have been more pleased with the results.
I ended up with a totally new way of drawing my Boytoons, and before I knew it, my imagination was soaring. I started writing stories that would feature my characters in all new adventures, and I would draw them in my new style. That’s how Boytoon Adventures was born. Currently sitting at over 72 pages, book #1 will be the first trade paperback to be published by Class Comics. It is slated for Summer 2009 release. My work as Bryce Peters is colored by Dennis Kovalenko and myself.
I chose to use the name Bryce Peters for this project to help fans differentiate between my two styles and to establish this new way of drawing as something separate from my classic one.
Drawing as Bryce Peters has been all I hoped it would be and more. I’ve cut loose on the stories in Boytoon Adventures #1 in a way I never could before. Ironically, it’s probably the raunchiest work I’ve created so far. A good friend of mine figures it’s because I’m drawing my guys as cartoons and not really restricted by the laws of physics too much! LOL!
Whatever the case may be, I love creating as Bryce Peters, and though I would never give up on my classic art style, I guarantee we’ll see a lot more Boytoon Adventures in the future.
